Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation (B.R.T.K.) A Brief History BRTK stands for Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation and it is the semi official broadcasting corporation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The establishment of BRTK dates back to December 25th, 1963 when Turkish Cypriot were deprived of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CYBC), along with other facilities of the 1960 partnership Republic of Cyprus, by Greek Cypriots. Until then, the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation had been jointly run by Turkish and Greek Cypriots. Therefor it became urgent for the Turkish Cypriots to have their own radio station to announce their just cause. Until 1966 Bayrak Radio was broadcasting in Turkish, English and Greek on the same channel. By the year 1966, it had manufactured locally a new transmitter, enabling it to broadcast through two channels. The name of the Bayrak Radio was changed to Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation (BRTK) after the establishment of a small TV Studio in Lefkosa in 1976. The transmission started in black-and-white, changing into PAL colour on July, 1, 1979. As from March 1983 it began transmitting in FM Radio stereo. In addition, two 10 Kw UHF PAL TV, three 5 Kw FM Radio Transmitters and a 100 meter antenna tower at Selvilitepe was put into service in November, 1987.
